- CoffeeandConversation
- Host: Didsbury Historical Society
- Description: Volunteers with the Didsbury and District Historical Society are all about having fun and love to host events and activities throughout the year that help us honour our Vision, which is to celebrate our heritage through interactive adventure and learning experiences. Held the third Wednesday of the month, Coffee and Conversation is one of the most popular monthly events in Didsbury, as people gather at the museum to visit with each other, and to learn about the history of our town, and the individuals who have made our county so rich and beautiful. One of those individuals is Bill Jepps, and we are fortunate he remains in Didsbury and can tell his story of being part of the Navy personnel in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve RCNVR. The RCNVR was used to recruit and build the navy. By the end of the war, Canada had the third largest navy in the world, with a complement of nearly 100,000! Most of these men and women were members of the RCNVR. Because he was only 17 years old, Bill had to get his parents' permission to enlist, which he did in 1943. After a week's leave in Montreal, he was shipped to Quebec City where the Navy was finishing up welding a brand new frigate named the HMCS Glace Bay. A frigate is an anti-submarine escort vessel used to guard convoys from submarines. Once the frigate was put out to sea, they headed for Bermuda. Trouble is, poor Bill ended up with jaundice and was taken to hospital by tugboat for about a week. Navy life began in earnest after that, and in the end, Jepps made eight different Atlantic crossings. Bill is eager to share these memories with you. His tales remind us of the sacrifices our young people made during war-time. Everyone is welcome to come, chat, enjoy a cup of coffee, and explore the Museum. Coffee and Conversation runs from 1 - 3 pm. This is a free event, but donations to the Museum are gratefully accepted, as they do help us "keep the lights on". The Museum is located at 2110 21st Avenue.
